What size tires

I was wanting to get 20s at some point for the stang, but I was curious about tire size. What's the biggest tire I can go with front and back without throwing of the speedo? Or would you guys just suggest a tuner?

DirtyD 06-06-2013 05:05 PM

These cars can handle up to a certain % increase or decrease in tire OD to correct the speedo, at least seeing what is said on SVTP that is. You don't really need a tune, but just a programmer that can adjust the values in the ECU via the handheld.

I personally try to stick as close to the OE tire OD as I can.

But we need to know tire widths and types of tire you are wanting to run.

GTRacerX 06-06-2013 06:06 PM

I was thinking Falken 452 with 255 up front and 275 or 285 out back. Te bigger the better out back just don't know how big I can go. I do plan on dropping it with some sport lines as well.

Do at least a 295 rear on a 10" rim. Or go bigger.

In the front, I would do a 9-9.5 if you can get the correct offset. Some rims are only 8.5 front. I would then run a 255-275 tires depending on rim width.

Unless you want to run a square setup

Zeek 06-06-2013 07:07 PM

My tire height is 27.3in I have stock 18s with 235/50/18 all season perellis I wouldn't go wider than what you need. Depends on what your planning on doing. Like me I plan on just street drags. 40-160 rolls and I won't be going over 450 er so HP so I don't need a huge tire. I barely spin the 235s in 2ed gear at a 40 punch and I'm at 410rwhp now

How? I spun my stock 255s with ease in second doing a 30 roll in 2nd.

downtime! 06-06-2013 07:12 PM

You can never really have too much tire. I spun the 245's badly with just the lt's and tune, and they are an absolute joke on there right now. The Razors are 10" and 9" and have 275/35's and 255/35's on them but I prefer the 295's on the back and will be switching them out when the 275's wear out.

Zeek 06-06-2013 07:17 PM

I Get just a tiny spin when I punch it. Idk how but these tire have 18k miles on em and are still working for me fine . When I get new rims I will only be going to 275s in a summer performance tire most likely.

I ditched my p-zeros at 20k with around 5/32 left. And I spun them maybe 10-15 times, but only for a few seconds. No burnouts, no drag racing, nothing. Not even hard launches

Zeek 06-06-2013 07:28 PM

Mine are about to make a trip to NY and back then its time for new wheels n tires soon as I can afford it. I'll proly use these for 23-25k miles

Same for me.:favorites13:

Tires a typically what people skimp out on which is unfortunate. Tires and dampers are the two most important components to a suspension. There is no such thing as too much tire on these cars.

GTRacerX 06-07-2013 04:57 PM

Could you fit 315s on a 20 inch wheel with the car lowered 1 inch front 1.5 back?

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that Steve is running a 315 on his wheels.

Steve is running a 305.
I had to remove my sportlines in the rear and put in prokits just to run a 315.

My rim has a 42 offset so I'm going 295 and it should close to flush with the fender. My 275s have good to me but i can tell the backend needs more tire. I just dont want to introduce too much oversteer.

Absolutely.....but only with wheels with around +50 offsets such as forgestars. An offset in the 40s will only allow 305 depending on the wheel design

And dont make the mistake that I made with going with a 8.5 rim. Be sure to get 9 or 9.5 front rim so u can fit a 265 or 275 upfront to balance out the wide rear tire. An 8.5 will limit u to a 255/35/20 which has a small side wall and will be over inch shorter than a 295 to 315. Not good for the car's balance and stance

I had 275 falken on 8.5" wheels and it looked fine, even better than on my current 10". It is definitely not wide enough for my 10". I might go 295 or 305 when these are gone...

GTRacerX 06-07-2013 06:32 PM

It would be a 20x9 30 offset front with 20x10 40 offset rear.

And you didn't have any issues? There's not a single tire manufacturer that recommends over a 265 on a 8.5 wheel. Are those 275 fronts on a 8.5 wheel in your signature pic?

265/35-20 Nitto NT555ZRs up front

+30 offset 20x9 fronts

I really liked the set up that I think was on Beau's car, I think he had 315s in the back. Does anyone know the wheels he has? I think they were steedas but I dont think they have them on their website. After seeing them, it made me reconsider mine.

They are black Steeda Spyders

Very nice setup! Is your speedo accurate?

Close enough. I've had PMs and all kinds of people telling me to buy a tuner so I can "get the speedometer accurate." My tires are 4% taller than stock, so when my speedometer reads 70, my actual road speed should be 73. That is assuming the stock speedo was 100% accurate to begin with, and they are built with a 5% tolerance. Every time I pass one of those speed displays in a construction zone I've been within 2mph of the reading, same as stock.

The front are 255 and the rear 275.
The 275 looked perfect on the 8.5 I had before.
Don't know if you can see it in the pictures...

So assuming 265/35/20 front and 305/35/20 rear who makes a good street tire that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

DirtyD 06-11-2013 04:47 PM

Do a search on TireRack for those sizes and see what pop up. Read customer and technical reviews and go from there. Look for deals and rebates too

Nobody.

Nitto Invos are available in 255/35 and 295/35, which is close, and about as cheap as you're going to find a set of 20s.

That's about what I paid for my tires, but the 305s only last about 15k miles so that's $650 in tires every 8 months. Fortunately the fronts are at 40k miles and are holding up very well; I will probably get 75k out of them.

I'm guessing you have drag radials on the back?

46Tbird 06-12-2013 09:30 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't want to drive one of these cars without them.

Arm and a leg is relative. On my C5 I was running 18s with a 265/35 and 295/35 BFG Goodrich KDW2s and that was just under $1,000 at Discount Tire with warranty on all four tires. I really wanted to go with the same tires but I found these for a really good price and matching sizes front and rear for the 19s I have.
