5.0 Oil Pressure Questions...
So my 5.0 is running the factory oil pressure gauge and I keep a kinda paranoid eye on it..
At cold start it runs about 3/4 of the way up the gauge, looks great. The problem comes up when it gets hot and sits at idle it can drop to about 1/4 on the gauge. Now since the gauge has no damn numbers at all I have no idea how unhealthy that it... Is that typical for a 5.0? It's running 10w30 right now... it should be perfect right? Any cons to running a straight 30 next oil change? |
5.0 Oil Pressure Questions...
Not the same, but not totally different. My 5.0 Bronco's oil pressure gauge goes all over the place. The truck has less than 100k and has been well maintained. After some reading it turns out that the gauge is nothing more than a dummy gauge. The sending unit is basically a switch. At some magic psi the gauge will read normal. A lot of the time the mechanism inside of the cluster is the culprit for the gauge being so jumpy. My neighbor, who owns a shop, said that if the gauge reads at all you're fine. Best bet is to install a mechanical gauge if you're worried.

I guess at some point I'll just invest in a real gauge and sender. :) |
its probably a little low, switch to 10-40 or 20-50, that will help some. My 408 was so damn hurt internally it was 8-10 psi hot, which would be like the red line on your gauge. as long as you have 10 psi per 1000 rpm you will be good to go. idle pressure isnt really important, as long as it shoots up when you give it gas.
