I went with polk audio myself cause they were on sale and sounded great, midnight11 did pioneer- both great replacements. Here are pics of the factory speaker plate:

I wonder if it would be worth putting some dynamat around them upon install. Also What is the sensitivity rating on the Polks you purchased?

I'd like to hear both of yall's side by side at some point. If I ever get done with the performance bug I may start in with the stereo stuff again. I might just run a quality 5-ch amp to power everything and still keep it clean. I won't be going crazy this time around, my Bronco is ridiculously loud and rarely gets driven.

Dont remember the ratings but after seeng the voice coils on the stock stuff anything you put in is an improvement. I got them at Best buy on sale for like $99 or something and they really being out the factory door woofer and clean up the sound. A 5 channel would be perfect that is what I have always done in all my cars except for this one so far. Glad to let you hear it whenever and its literally a 30 minute mod

Does any one know what kind of continuous/peak watts the stock reciever provides to those 6x8s?

I'd guess the RMS wattage is 15-25 watts, stock stereos have gotten much better in the last few years but they are still very underpowered.

I thought I had already posted it here, but I went with Infinity 6832cf's. I got them off of Amazon for around $60/pair. I went ahead and bought the factory wiring adapter so it would be plug and play. They sound GREAT compared to stock and a great price!

It's all about the enclosure too, but round speakers are definitely more efficient than oval ones. Ford has has 5x7/6x8s in mustangs as long as I can remember ('93+)

Just remember the golden rule, you have to double wattage to increase 3 dB. So a 25 watt vs. a 40 watt won't be quite night and day. More is better, but just keep the THD to a minimum. Also with super high sensitivity speakers, they can over power the rest of the system if they are stock. You can only do so much to balance it with stock controls.
Also I'm not very confident in high voltage (speaker) wire inputs on amps, nor have I found a good line level converter that's not ridiculously expensive. I've had my share of head units, but I like stock looking head units for security now...

Exactly. That's why is love a speaker with a higher sensitivity to balance out with the rest of the system. I dnt wanna have to crank the radio up just to et the same sound as stock.

Good writeup! Ford should be ashamed to put a sound system like they have in the stang.
I put kappas in all 4 corners as well as a alpine type r 12 in a sealed box with the 500 and it's an amazingly clear setup. The kappas sensitivity works great with the door subs and I toned down the sub hz crossover where the slopes mesh well.I will say tho... the back speakers are a pita! Took a hr for the doors and a whole Day for the rears lol.
