Cat back systems replace all components of the exhaust system from the catalytic converters to the exhaust tips. Axle backs are from the axle back, which is the same thing as mufflers only.
And for the record, full exhaust is from the headers/manifolds back.

so would the cat back system not let you pass inspection since it removes the catalytic converters?

It doesn't remove the cats it bolts to the cats and replaces everything to the tips

Cat-BACK just means everything from the end of the cats (not including the cats) and back is replaced. Cats are part of the mid-piping.

And this. From cat to axle-back is sufficient with nothing measurable to be gained.

I never had an after market axle back on it so I couldn't say much for gains between the two. It had to have picked up something though along with my Airaid. I dyoned bone stock 372/359 and after Airaid intake / Borla S-type catback it was putting out 382/387 at the 1st TS dyno day last year. No tune yet. So I'd say the catback attributed to a bit of those gains.

I agree. I run the outlaws and they are about as loud as the muffler deletes without a ton of popping.
