Simply increasing the amount of air the engine is taking in won't increase the power. To increase power you have to maximize the efficiency of the air AND the fuel. You do that by tuning. Also you can have a car that makes a ton of power and it be with a crappy tune. Reference downtime!s recent thread.

I thought more air being moved meant better power?

If you're compensating with the proportionate amount of fuel and spark to combust it all efficiently then yes. Otherwise running too much air(lean) or fuel(rich) can be detrimental.

Not to mention the factory intake with a K&N filter is going to do about the same as an aftermarket intake... It's a pretty damn good air box for being OEM.

The only problem on the factory intake is not the box. Its the silence box and the diameter in the tube.

Keep stock box till you want to go with a tune. Just do it.

Depends.
We did back-to-back testing at the track between the JLT and stock airbox using the same tune sans the MAF transfer function. The difference in times:

.06

That falls within the margin of error. There are no real performance gains to be had running an aftermarket CAI. Run one for looks/sound only.

So then an aftermarket CAI has no better effect on the engine's potential cfm as the stock intake?

The stock CAI flows enough air that it isn't a restriction. Ford did their homework.
