Downtime,

Most of us between 25 and 35 dreamed of Supras, EVOs, and R34s. I honestly had no interest in muscle cars until this current generation because imports always handled better. But they were untainanble for me and automakers have since A. Stopped making them or B. they now cost over $100k because the muscle cars have caught up. What was it like driving the R34?

First off, I guess I better clarify somewhat, what I had was an R32. I don't think the R34's even came out until around '99, and I was long since home by then. Sorry for the confusion. Mine was all stock as well, as there really wasn't a "tuner" market yet at that time. So, AWD and a blistering (IIRC) 300 hp, it wasn't exactly slow, but after having a steady diet of American muscle for years up to that point, it felt a bit anemic. The handling, on the other hand, was something that up to then, I had never experienced. I had a Corvette or two by then, but this chassis was light years ahead of anything we had over here. I wouldn't mind getting another now really, but the gray market thing has made them damn near impossible to get now. Maybe an importer through Canada?

I saw an R32 for sale at this small shop near DFW Airport about 2 years ago. I was completely blown away. It was just parked outside. I had to stop and look at it. A girl came out asking if I wanted to buy it. Said it was legal. I asked about the price(I was not in the market at all as I still was financing the Corvette) but they wanted $30k. I just said nah. Did get to drive it. It was a single turbo, but the wiring under the hood was a complete mess. It wasn't a GTR either, it was a GTS. Nice car but $30k for a backyard wired 1994 GTS, no thanks.

The Rsx was full Aspec kit and suspension only. Great track car. The Evo I loved but it was just not a gd daily at the time, With boltons it made 320whp. Havent driven anything that handled like it since.

I still love this car! And I was hoping for some insight as to the origin of your screen name with this post. Was there a 4.6 T Bird in the mix somewhere?

That would be a 1978 King Cobra. The guy that owns that black one (Denny) had one exactly like this in high school. Orange, with T-tops, and a muscular 139hp 302 2bbl and C4 auto. And the best part, 13" wheels, lol!

Buy it! There wasn't a 4.6 T Bird in the group, but there was a 460-bird.

It wasn't turbocharged, it was just built from a Turbo Coupe.

I fucking hated that car, lol. It had a manual rack and manual brakes with a spool and slicks and skinnies. The mostly stock 460 had a mild cam but still had untouched factory D3VE (good) heads. With an Edelbrock Performer intake an 850 double pumper, plus the 1 7/8 swap headers, it made a little bit of power but it always ran hot as hell and it must have weighed 4200lbs, lol. I only took it to the track once and it ran an 8.001, so it was about as fast as a stock 5.0 today. I was disgusted and sold it. The dude I sold it to put a 250-shot of nitrous on it and gutted it, and ended up running some low 10s so I guess he had more fun with it than I ever did. I was just glad to see it go.

If I had a bit more room. I already have the '82 sitting in the driveway, just couldn't see having that cool ass M2 unless I could put her in the garage.
