Electricity Bill WTF?!

Has everyone else's electricity bills been absolutely ridiculous the past couple of months? My most recent bill is $400 fucking dollars for a three bedroom house. We turn the heater down to 58-60 degrees during the day when we're gone too. What the hell?

Yup. My December bill was $218 bucks. November's was $130. It's crazy.

Holy hell?!!? December for me was $113 and November was $108....
I do have gas heat tho. Even mid summer my electric bill is never over $200. And yes I live in a house not an apt

Yeah, the gas definitely helps I'm sure.

The problem is that we're renting the house and the damn thermostat is in this tiny downstairs hallway next to a bathroom, two bedrooms, and the garage door. We have an upstairs that is only the master bedroom and bath. Well that hallway can be 68* while the upstairs is like 85* and it takes about 10 minutes for the temp in that hallway to drop enough to kick on the heater. I want to ask the landlord about moving the thermostat but I would doubt he will want to pay for that. At night we turn the thermostat down to 65 just to keep the upstairs from being a sauna and it still seems to kick on every 15 minutes or so. Ridiculous.

We have kind of the same problem. Our room stays hotter than the rest of the House. So we closed the vent in the bedroom and got a cheap space heater that we can set the temp for the room to what we want. Has worked well so far

The Joker 01-30-2014 02:10 PM

Yep, mine was 318 in December was 206 in November. Crazy!

46Tbird 01-30-2014 02:13 PM

My electric bill has never been over $200, so I was stunned when it was $350 last month. I guess that's what happens when your girlfriend is in the house doing loads of laundry and dishes, and having to run the pool for two full weeks to keep everything from freezing. Right at 4000kwh... Jesus Christ.

PCB 01-30-2014 02:32 PM

$104 for a 2,400 sq/ft home. Only thing that is gas in my home is the HVAC. I use Ambit Energy.

saunupe1911 01-30-2014 03:03 PM

mine was around $320...greedy Coserv smh

rlhay2 01-30-2014 05:00 PM

Get that thermostat situation resolved and it should help. The constant heating and cooling is not helping you save money.

I spray foamed the attic on my house and I have been amazed at how little my heating/cooling expenses have been. The upstairs HVAC typically only comes on at night.

DirtyD 01-30-2014 06:19 PM

I paid $46 last month for my bill. :)

STROKD 01-30-2014 06:47 PM

Electric heater ftmfl. Our office doubled since summer time... it's pretty bullshit.

that said, my elec bill for my house was 79 bucks in dec and 63 in jan. Heater bill was only 80/mo... gas > electricity.

five.slow 01-30-2014 07:29 PM

damn that sucks. i have government housing and they go off a average with same types of housing setups. so if the average (just and example i donno how they measure) 5000kw used if you are with in 5% then you dont owe shit. if you are anything below 5% of the average you get paid the difference. if its over the 5% then you pay the difference. we always get checks from these fools.

I thought I'd be the cheap guy at $58 but looks like Danny has me beat. Gas everything for the MF win!

Dan12GT 01-30-2014 10:27 PM

My house is a brand new build so its electric everything. Mine has been at its highest of ~$150 for the last 2 months. 2300 sq. ft 3 bed 2 bath, single story home.

Wouldn't trade my gas cooktop for anything. The oven, on the other hand, leaves a LOT to be desired.

Soulowd 01-31-2014 01:11 AM

Yeah mine was almost $400 as well. Sux that's like another bolt on missed opportunity:(

Haha exactly! I'm fine with $100. Obviously, I'd prefer between $50-60. But shit $400 for 1600 sq ft. Screw two story houses. Can't wait for my wife and I to be settled in enough to buy a house so I can do whatever the hell I want with it.

fordplay 02-03-2014 09:11 AM

Yeah. Being a rental there is only so much you can do. Close the vent upstairs. . That might help.. and always go for gas heater.. gas stove. Electric oven.. And fireplace.. If you lose power you can still cook on the stove.. lose gas and the oven still works... and fireplace in case Alllllllllll else fails.

musclestang89 02-04-2014 12:33 PM

mine electric was low, aboit $70. but my gas bill was like $160. lol. and I do not have a gas hot water heater either. I keep my house warm. lol. its an older home so it loses its air

Dominic Toretto 02-04-2014 01:50 PM

My current bill due is for $150. That's much more reasonable. I don't recall using so much less energy than I did when the bill was for over $200. Weird.

five.slow 02-04-2014 07:36 PM

just got a $73 check in the mail for being under the average last month.

Slow Five-O 02-04-2014 08:16 PM

Just got 51 bucks from txu. Thanks for the gas to winstar!
