Mmmm, I wouldn't say they are idiots lol. One inch is 25.4mm. So 255mm/25.4 comes to 10.039 inches, so the tire should be wider than the 8.5inch rim, same for the rear. I do know that different manufacturers measure differently... somehow. I have BFGs with a 265 in the front on a 9inch wheel and the tire looks wider than that. Also have a 285 on my 10inch rears and the tires stick out much wider than the wheel.

Long answer short, his tires shouldn't be stretched based on the measurements unless I am doing it wrong.
